Delicious Springtime Asparagus is Here!

Delicious Springtime Asparagus is Here!

April 14, 2020 – Yesterday was the first day of harvest for many asparagus farmers in Kosovo.
It is the first year of production for asparagus farmer Gentrit Bytyqi who reeled in 72 kg of fresh asparagus from his 1 hectare of cultivated land in the Fushtica village of Drenas municipality. Gentrit and his business partner Valentina Bajrami are young agronomists and grantees supported by USAID in the production of asparagus.
It is estimated that there are about 10 hectares of cultivated asparagus throughout Kosovo. In terms of production potential, Kosovo should harvest up to 2.5 tons of asparagus this year.
However, as with other agriculture sectors, movement restritions and lockdowns enforced by the government due to the coronavirus pandemic, are presenting difficulty in selling the asparagus harvest to markets and other selling points across Kosovo.
Asparagus harvesting time is limited to 6 – 8 weeks, and we hope that things will look up quickly for farmers, although many of them are planning to freeze part of their crop for sale at a later date.
